Translators of color are often under-represented, while they are immensely valuable for translations of works by black authors; 1) because they are more familiar with cultural references from other black cultures from the African diaspora (read: references are often recognizable or about the same) and 2) because they can often better identify with race-related events. This makes it a good choice from a social point of view to ask a translator of color for works by authors of color.
Moreover, translation is not just converting words into another language, it also means converting the story to the target culture , a translator of color can offer a unique perspective on ' the black (diaspora) experience' in the target culture.
Black English is often considered less prestigious than American English, when in fact it is a full variant of American English. Because of my specialization I am aware of this stigma and am I able to offer an unique perspective on translating Black English.
